BUSINESS PROBLEM:
Story pointing and estimation in general is a "Dark Art" for many engineers. Amplify sent me to Toronto to present a training session to one of our vendors to help them provide more realistic delivery dates.
SOLUTION:
I developed the original deck on the plane to Toronto. However, due to the presentation's overwhelming success and the continuing problem of software estimation, I have continued to update the deck and have presented it in NYC, Durham, and Atlanta (for several different companies).
EFFECTIVENESS:
When I present this deck it pulls back the curtain on the art, skill, and science of estimation. I have found that teams that have experienced this presentation and really grok the contents become much better at estimating and hitting dates in the future. With coaching, teams can continue to improve incrementally over time.
